Friday Favorites-Random outfits

Happy Friday!  I never understand how the holiday season gets so busy.  I don’t have children or any family in the area, so shopping and commitments are minimal, but it still feels like I hardly have time to sit during the month of December.  I admire those of you that have kids and family activities on top of everything else, I don’t know how you manage all of it!

I had a few random outfits this week that I put together, and really ended up liking, so they are my Friday Favorites this week!  I tend to get stuck in a rut and pair the same items together all the time, or think I have to wear a certain item in a certain way.  I’m trying to be a bit more creative, which not only looks more stylish and interesting, but also makes you feel like you have a bigger wardrobe, when you learn how to mix and match things more effectively.

I wore this outfit to an event last weekend, it was casual but I still wanted to look stylish.  My first instinct would have been to wear a simple long sleeve t-shirt under this poncho, but I didn’t really have one that matched because the white is really an off-white.  So I had to get creative!  It’s pretty impossible to tell in the picture, but I wore an off-white cardigan underneath.  I ended up really liking how it looked, the cardigan has shiny buttons which gave it a much more interesting look than a t-shirt would have.  I like this poncho from Loft a lot, because it has actual sleeves rather than just a giant piece of fabric that goes over your head.  This one is from last year, I bought it on clearance over the summer.  But everything is on sale right now at Loft, and they have many ponchos to choose from.  The cardigan is a simple one from New York & Co.  They usually have every color of the rainbow and they are on sale a lot, I have a few in different colors, they are good to wear over dresses in the summer too if going somewhere that might be cool inside.

I love long cardigans, they are so comfortable and cozy in the winter.  This one from Eddie Bauer last year is actually a lighter weight, so I wore it on a day when it wasn’t too cold here.  I just threw it on over a simple tank top, put on a necklace, and was ready to go.  I wore these mules from DSW, they are comfortable and a versatile taupe color.  The shoes are actually the part of this outfit outside my comfort zone – normally I wear this sweater with the same pair of boots every time, but since it wasn’t cold, I decided to try the mules and really liked the look.  The jeans are one of my favorites, also from Loft.  Loft denim runs large, so take that into account when shopping.  (My helper is at it again!)

I’ve had this faux fur vest from Old Navy for years and years.  It seems like every couple years they become popular again.  I’ve always struggled with how to wear it, but found that I really liked it with this off-white-but-slightly-tan sweater dress from Abercrombie & Fitch.  I actually wore the vest as my coat that day, because it wasn’t too cold and this was enough for the short walk I have into work.  My office tends to be chilly, so it was also nice to have something I could put on without the bulk of a sweater or jacket.  I found a similar vest at Target, for a very reasonable price!

I purposely cut off my legs in this picture because I wasn’t crazy about the tights and boots I wore with this dress.  I’ll have to get creative with my lower half next time I wear this dress!

I would love to hear from you in the comments about outfits or looks you have discovered and how you are creative with styling items you already own!

Have a good weekend, thanks for visiting!

Friday Favorites – Turkey Day Fashion!

Happy Friday!  Or should I say, Happy Six Days Until Thanksgiving!  This week’s Friday Favorites is a little hastily written, as somehow the week got away from me and I didn’t have a lot of time to plan it out.  I want to show a few of my favorite styles for Thanksgiving.  Every family or group of friends does Thanksgiving a little differently – some are formal, some are sweatpants-casual, and some are in between.  I have a few ideas below for some great Turkey Day outfits in a range of styles.

This outfit leans more towards the casual side, but is still very stylish AND comfortable, which for a lot of us, is very important on a day with lots of food!  The camo leggings are a few years old, but still very popular and easy to find.  The field jacket is from Old Navy, I featured it in this earlier post.  Throw on a plain t-shirt in a neutral color, or even a cute graphic tee, and you are fashionable, comfortable, and prepared for cooler weather or potentially being too warm and losing the jacket.  I would either wear this with some neutral booties, or for even more comfort, some stylish sneakers, like Converse or Adidas.

I love this cozy vest from Bearpaw.  It looks great with jeans, a skirt, or even over a dress.  The color is so neutral it can go with almost anything.  Some cute booties or even over the knee boots will give this vest a lot of style.  If your weather will be chillier for the holiday, this would be a great choice.

This flannel plaid dress is so stylish and on trend.  Plaid is so big this fall, and I love wearing this with some thick tights or leggings, and riding boots.  You could also do a bootie or even a cute winter boot if it is cold and/or snowy where you live.  The belt also keeps it from looking too oversized and gives it shape.  This is from Eddie Bauer, and the flannel is extra thick and therefore very warm.  I got this last year but they have some similar ones here.  This would “dress” up your look a bit for the holiday. (See what I did there)

This picture didn’t come out great, because I couldn’t find a good dark background.  This is a cream colored sweater I bought last spring on clearance from Loft.  It is a crossover or wrap style, and is so soft and luxurious feeling.  This looks great with some black dress or ponte pants, and black booties, if your Thanksgiving gathering is more dressy.

And just for fun, if your gathering is super casual, here is where you can find some great comfy cozy lounge clothes!

Everyone have a Happy Thanksgiving, wherever it may take you!

A Few More Fall Items!

I guess this isn’t much of a preview, since we are already halfway through October, where does the time go!  I was on vacation two weeks ago, and have been under the weather ever since returning, so it has been awhile since my last post.  More to come later on the trip!  I want to show a few more of my favorite fall items and trends.  Many of you may live where it is already chilly, but we were still in shorts and sandals here in North Carolina until Michael passed through.  I have mixed feelings – I love summer and hot weather, but am excited to wear some of the new fall items I have picked up!  We are a long way from sweaters and coats though, and that is fine with me.

I love this field jacket I picked up at Old Navy.  It is a great weight for fall here, and will go with a lot.  I haven’t needed it yet, but I suspect I will pull it out within the next couple weeks.  It comes in a few colors, but I bought the olive shown above.  Several colors are on sale, but not all, but the price is still very affordable, and this is a great transition piece no matter where you live.  It runs a bit small, so if you order online, you might want to size up.  I was in the store, they didn’t have the olive, but I tried on a different color to determine what size I needed, and then ordered it when I got home.  The waist has a drawstring, so you can pull it in and not look so boxy.  Field jackets AND olive are both big fall trends, so this fits the bill all the way around.

Mustard yellow is also a big color for this season.  I have this shirt I purchased earlier in the summer from Loft, and have been saving it for the fall, because I felt like the color just exuded autumn.  I love the flutter sleeve detail.  The fabric very soft and flowy.  For cooler weather, this would look great underneath a denim jacket.

I bought this shirt last week at a local boutique, BohoBlu.  This was a warehouse sale item so is not available on their website, but bell sleeve tops continue to be very popular.  That’s a good thing, because I have several I have bought over the past year or so!  This one is also a very soft fabric, and will be a great top to pull out for dinner out when it’s chilly this fall.

One more item I have been wanting, but have not yet purchased, is a plaid waterfall vest, similar to below.  This particular one is from the Cato Fashions website, but I have seen them at other retailers as well.  I’m undecided what color scheme I want, so I plan to hit a few stores to see what I can find that will coordinate with other items I already own.  I think this could be worn over a long sleeve knit t-shirt, a turtleneck, a denim shirt, or even a fitted sweater.  Add some booties, or even riding boots, and you’ll have a great, classic looking fall outfit.  Plaid never goes out of style if worn correctly – it doesn’t have to look like a lumberjack!

I hope this gave you some ideas for some fall pieces you may not have already purchased.  I’ll be showing some of my favorite fall outfits in the coming weeks, as we finally are getting cool enough weather to wear them!  Have a great week everyone!
